| The Swakopmund Jetty. The German Government in 1911 decided to build the Jetty in order to be able to off load goods bound for this country as the only deep sea harbour at the time, Walvis Bay, was occupied by the British. It was to be 640 meters long and equipped with two five-ton and two tree-ton cranes, as well as a railway line. Only a third of the pier was eventually built as construction was halted in 1914 due to the outbreak of the First World War. In 1919, the northern side was covered with planks for pedestrians and anglers a concept which gradually grew to create a promenade where visitors can either angle or take a stroll. The Jetty is open for the public and is a very popular landmark for locals and visitors alike. Plans are underway to restore the entire Jetty and to provide more facilities such as an oyster bar and ablution facilities for the public. |
